Diet for Lowering Cholesterol

Having high cholesterol levels has a direct negative impact on your health. It is a major risk factor for heart disease.  And, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S.  You need to bring your cholesterol into the normal range. The food you eat plays an important role in decreasing your cholesterol levels. Switch to a diet for lowering cholesterol.

What are normal cholesterol levels? Your total cholesterol should be lower than 200. Your LDL (bad) cholesterol should be less than 100. Your HDL (good) cholesterol should be higher than 60. And, your triglycerides should be less than 150.

If your cholesterol is not in the optimum ranges, than you need to work on it. You can do it without medication.  You CAN do it by changing your diet to a cholesterol friendly diet.

First, let’s talk about what you want you don’t want to eat.  You want to limit trans fats and saturated fats. These fats are found in packaged meals and snacks, such as cookies, cakes, chips, candy, many frozen dinners and meals, full fat cheeses, milk, meats, fried foods and many other foods.

You want to completely cut out trans fats.  These are fats that are added into foods.  You will not find this type of fat in whole, natural, unprocessed foods. Eating more whole foods will help to eliminate trans fats from your diet.

Now, what should you eat?

You want to eat foods that are rich in soluble fiber, polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 fatty acids, and complex carbohydrates.  Great foods to choose are oatmeal, fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, beans, and whole wheat breads.

It really is not hard to lower your cholesterol with food alone. I have watched many family members with high cholesterol change their diet and watched their cholesterol levels decrease!  It can be done and is much safer than using medication.  There are many possible side effects with medication.

There is a great e-book called “Beating Cholesterol” that goes in depth about the foods you should eat to lower your cholesterol.  It is a fantastic book, and I highly recommend it.  It was written by a nutritionist.   You will also get a couple of other helpful e-books free when purchasing “Beating Cholesterol”.
